What age do you start children in piano lessons?

At what age should i start my little girl in piano lesson? She already show some interest, she is 19 months old and can sit for a hour or more at our family piano and play with the keys. she will also sit and strum on a guitar for a bit too, but she show much more interest in the piano. She has been siting on the bench or with me playing with the keys since she was a year or less.

Some tutors do teach children from 18 months, however, it generally isn’t recommended.
Most tutors prefer to teach once the child is 4 years old, by that point, the child has a basic idea of rhythm.

Sounds like she’ll be a little musical genius though! I recommend you start her on piano lessons a few weeks before she goes to primary school and then see how she copes with piano playing and doing homework from school at the same time.

You have to wait until they are old enough to understand what the teacher is telling them. A nineteen month old is not ready to listen, mainly because she can ‘t comprehend what the teacher is saying. Wait until she is 6 or 7 so she will be able to under stand.

    2 months old.

My daughter just turned 2 (25mo old) and I am very interested in putting her in some music lessons.

I would just look around. A Music School in my area starts piano lessons at 18 months, so there are definitely some places that offer classes to 19mo.

it depends on how dedicated they are.

you don’t want to force them into anything.

i started at five and was forced into it from my parents even though i loved it.

i quit at nine and layed off playing for two years didn’t even want to look at our piano.

but, if she really still likes playing and still would want to and asks you.
(don’t ask her) you know that she made the wrong decision.

She is too young. At her age, you are doing the right thing letting her play with the keys at her own pace. You could even play some simple tunes so she can hear them. She may surprise you with what she picks up and may learn to pick out notes by ear. But there is not need to learn to read music, etc. In general, I say it depends on the child. I would say 6, but an attentive, motivated child might start at 4 with someone good with that age.

personally I think around 7 or 8 is a better choice and only if she asks for lessons

She’ll be in education long enough when she starts school etc

She’s learning plenty about music by being around you,
so let her enjoy that without making it into a chore,by making her attend lessons, which she may resent when she is older

Most famous pianists didn’t get piano lessons until they were 3 or 4yo. Just let her have fun and perhaps talk to her some about the piano, and play some really easy tunes so she can copy them.

1st or 2nd grade. Then they are old enough to understand what they’re learning and why. My mom teaches piano and said children are best able to learn at that age, regardless of how interested they are in playing with a piano. Before 7 or 8 thats all they are doing, is just playing with it.
