How many hours should I practice piano a day?

Hi, I am at a level 8-9 in piano and I have been taking lessons for about eight years. Currently I practice two hours a day, but I’m not sure that is enough. Many of my friends practice 5-6 hours a day. I am a senior planning to major in piano in college next year so I feel I should be devoting my time to such a thing. What do you think??

2 hours seems right. I think you’re showing a lot of dedication, which is great. But you’re still young, so don’t forget to go out and have fun while you still can!

    2?

Definitely at least 3 and a half hours. If you are practicing for competition or college at least 5. It depends on how bad you want it.

    about 2 hours a day

Five to six hours a day is a bit excessive. You need time for yourself and your other hobby activities and responsibilities too! I say three to three and a half hours max. If you use the time wisely it should be more than enough.

    XOXO,

Hey I know how you feel. Feeling pressured to practice something more. The thing is, is that you should practice with whatever you feel you need to. As i can see you are feeling your not practicing enough so maybe that is a sign? But personally i think 5-6 hours is redicoulous. I think you should look more into it. Give a call to the college you are applying to and ask what the average time is that the students practice for and then maybe decide what you are going to do from there. Good luck : )

Vladimir Horowitz always told everybody that 3 hours of INTENSIVE practise (so where you really get tired) per day, EVERY day, is enough to become as good as he was. In his opinion any more practise would not be beneficial. But to be clear, he ment real hard practise where.

I do 25-30min…and have been taking lessons for about 4 to 5 years
    quite embarrassing
    dont really enjoy the piano
but for you, who i assume loves the piano and will have no problem playing continuous hours of it can do 5 to 6 hours as well.

If you have time during the day, play more.
Also remember to focus on school work so yeah don’t forget

If you are taking this up as a career, you are most likely very talented, but 4 Hours a day wouldn’t be pushing it.

I think 5/6 hpd (hour per day) is waaaaaaaaay too much. I think a level 8-9 should practice 2 hpd

    1 hr a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 10 years a decade, 100 years a century, a thousand years a millenium.
